The number of people 65 years and older (currently about 34.7 million) will double during the next 30 years. The number of Americans aged 80 and older is expected to rise from 9.2 million today to 31.6 million by the year 2050. As population becomes older, the number of elderly persons with mental illnesses will increase. Worldwide, elderly people lead the World Health Organization's list of new cases of mental illness: 236 elderly people per 100,000 suffer from mental illness. There is an urgent need among physicians to acquire medical knowledge in detecting and managing the different psychiatric conditions impacting this special population.
To close this educational gap, the Puerto Rico Psychiatric Society, District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association, in a joint sponsorship with Ponce School of Medicine has designed the 8 credits CME activity THIRD GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY CONGRESS. It will be held at the Ritz Carlton San Juan on Saturday, October 8, 2011.
This symposium, aimed at physicians, will provide them with up-to-date information to assure they will have adequate tools to deal with these patients. Topics will be presented by prestigious geriatric psychiatrists
