Response of Nestor J Galarza to a recent listserve dialogue among members of the American Psychiatric Association:

"In Puerto Rico we are gearing up to fight any bill that threatens quality of care for people with mental disorders. I am sure the College of Physicians and Surgeons would support psychiatrists and other physicians.

Have had no such bill yet. Rumors recently indicate that somebody may be quietly training psychologists to prescribe. Rumors that we will test within days.

We all must keep in mind who the stakeholders are if such a law is passed that would allow non medical personnel to prescribe psychotropic drugs: law makers, patients, physicians, non physician prescribers, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, and others.
